Dr. Bill Maskill 

Bill has worked in the area of infectious disease since 1978 having started his career as a research scientist for the Welcome Institute (New Zealand). In December 1978 he took up the position of science project officer for the New Zealand Health Department which involved the development of diagnostic methods for zoonotic diseases.

 

Following a move to Australia in 1984 with his wife Vivienne (originally from Melbourne) and their 3 daughters (Shena, Philippa and Justine), Bill was appointed the senior scientist of the Australian National HIV Reference Laboratory from it’s founding in December 1984 until December 1989. From January 1990 until September 1991 he held the position as senior serologist at Fairfield Hospital, Melbourne. In September 1991 he took up a Short-term consultancy at the World Health Organisation, during which time he held the position of Project Manager in the Office of Research, Global Programme on AIDS, Geneva Switzerland, and supervised a field evaluation of HIV diagnostic tests in Africa and Asia.

 

From October 1992, Bill was the Information Services Manager of the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (V.I.D.R.L.) and was closely associated with the development of the various information services developed at the laboratory up until mid 2006. In July 2006, Bill was appointed the Laboratory Manager of V.I.D.R.L. and held that position until June 2015. In mid 2015 Bill was appointed

as the facilities’ and compliance Manager of the High Containment laboratories at the new Doherty Institute in Melbourne.

 

Bill, has a wide experience in diagnostic pathology, particularly of diseases with a viral cause and has been extensively involved in the design and commissioning of High Containment Laboratories

 

Bill has been amazing in helping us form the important foundations of Tahitanga.  He has been extremely generous with his time and wisdom! None of this would exist without him!
